Lizards

There are several ways to transport lizards. Giant lizards such as Blue Tongue Lizard, large monitors or adult bearded dragons can be freighted like snakes, bagged and in a secured plastic or wooden container. Smaller ones like geckos or dwarf monitors can be transported in a smaller container lined with paper towel. The lizard is placed on the top of the towel and place the lid on to seal the container. This inner container will need to have appropriate airholes.

This smaller container is then placed into the larger plastic container and packed with packing paper to stop the smaller container from moving around during transport. Again this outer container needs to have appropriate airholes. It is always best to place airholes on the sides as generally airline staff will stick important documentation to the lid area sealing any airholes.

In summer time slightly damp paper towel can be used under the lizard to add some humidity and allow the lizard to keep a little cooler.

In Winter time people have added hand warmers  to the outer container to add a small amount of warmth. These hand warmers can get very warm and is not recommended.

Points to Remember to Ensure Your Lizard is Comfortable and Secure While Transportation

  1. 1. Make sure your container is big enough for your lizard to fit in with ease, tails can be slightly bent as long as the lizard is comfortable with this.
  2. 2. Transport your lizard in a secure and well-ventilated inner container or hessian bag.
  3. 3. Layer the bottom of the inner plastic box with paper towel.
  4. 4. Place inner container or bag into larger outer container.
  5. 5. Ensure the container is tightly closed and cannot open accidentally, tip ties can be effective in doing this.
  6. 6. Look out for signs of sickness before and after the journey.
